Korfball officially launches Saturday

After almost a decade of groundwork, korfball will be officially launched at Blantyre Youth Centre (BYC) on Saturday, a day before the Korfball Association of Malawi (KAM) holds its inaugural elective general assembly.

KAM general secretary Mzee Makawa, whose committee has been overseeing the development of the sport on an interim basis since 2006, said korfball is now ready to get into serious business.

korfballSports Council has bankrolled korfball’s activities to the tune of K400 000 while Mkaka Construction Company has contributed K20 000.

“We will start with the launch, which will be spiced up by a mini-tournament involving teams from Blantyre, Malawi Police Service and the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) on Saturday,” said Makawa.

“Then, we will go into polls on Sunday into elections to give office bearers a four-year term.”

Korfball is a non-contact mixed-zone sport featuring both male and female players who deploy basketball and netball tactics to outfox each other on the court.

Each side comprises eight players—four males and four females. In the field, a woman can pass the ball to either her female or male teammate, but she is not allowed to mark a male opponent. The same applies to a male player.
