Lack of potable water riles residents

Residents of Kaphiri in Lilongwe say they are afraid that cholera might take long to be contained if Lilongwe Waters Board (LWB) does not improve the water situation in the area.

According to the residents, taps in the area have been dry for over a week, forcing residents to resort to water from unprotected sources.

However, LWB has dismissed the reports, saying the situation on the ground is different.

But one of the residents, James Longwe, told The Nation that the situation is worrisome and if LWB does not do anything about it, the issue is likely to get out of hand.

In an interview, LWB chief executive officer Alfonso Chikuni said upon hearing reports of water shortage in the area through the social media, he sent a team to check the situation.

“That is not the situation on the ground. Most of the times people exaggerate things,” he said.

Ministry of Health spokesperson Joshua Malango said they are encouraging people to use clean water. n
