Let me learn—street kid

Listen to this article

Street kids can be bothersome, especially when they want money, food and other items as they grapple with hand-to-mouth alms.

But a nine-year-old in Mzuzu on Monday stunned crowds at the city’s main car park when he cringed to Pastor Dyghton Mbewe not to beg for coins or banknotes.
Kondwani Mwale grabbed the pastor’s hand, begging: “Pray for me so that I can go back to school.”

Mbewe prays for the boy

The car park is a venue for Mbewe’s daily prayers for the sick, businesspeople and other interested people.

But Mwale, a Standard Three dropout at Masasa Primary School in the city, said he thought of taking advantage of the prayers because life has been hard since he ventured into street begging in 2014.
The minor sells jumbos at Mzuzu Main Market.

In an interview, Pastor Mbewe said he is ready to offer the boy a scholarship.
