Lilly Alfonso shines

It was all glitz and glamour. On Friday, the packed Lilongwe Old Town Mall glittered with models who dazzled fashionistas and fashion police with creative dresses that hint at the exceptional talent that underpin Lilly Alfonso’s clothing line.

The renowned fashion designer staged the glamorous event ahead of her trip to England where she is expected to showcase her creations at the African Fashion Week London (AFWL) on the sidelines of the Olympic Games next month.

According to online sources, AFWL is a collaborative exhibition, highlighting the industry’s premier African prints and designers. It captures the surge of the African- inspired trends in the industry that is refusing to grow in Malawi.
Months after attending a fashion summer academy in Italy, Alfonso made a presentation of her LA label, where she showcased clothes she will display in London.

During AFWL, she plans to sell Malawi and her line ideas to the world.

Explained Alfonso in an interview: “It’s important to have Malawians involved in my presentation during the fashion event. That is why I held the fashion show a month before my departure on July 29. It’s in my interest to have Malawi see and critique my designs before the rest of the world does.

“I am so delighted with the feedback from the audience. This has made me see how much Malawi loves fashion. It would be very unfair to showcase these creations elsewhere before my country. I now know the outfits a majority of Malawians want and where I must improve.”

She said participants at the summer fashion course in Italy fell in love with her designs and registered her for the London fashion week which runs from August 3 to 4.

Her offerings will share the spotlight with designs from the rest of the world, a chance to broaden her scope.

“What I am designing now are contemporary clothes with either zingwe za mbuzi or shoe laces. I’m sure I will learn a few things in London” she said.

“Her designs show she has the potential to open another window of opportunity and fame for the country’s fashion industry. Fashion design is slowly joining the band of Malawi’s flag carriers,” said Nyimbo Music Company president Daud Suleman.

However, Suleman said there is need to present a Malawian theme in some of the designs Alfonso showcased such as using the black, red and green colours from our flag.
