A story which appeared in our newspaper about a thief who stole a four-month-old baby at Bwaila Hospital in Lilongwe, has borne fruit.

People cornered the alleged thief at Nathenje, some 20 kilometres from the Capital City, and facilitated a reunion between mother and child.

Twenty two-year-old Jennifer Duncan shed tears of joy when she was re-united with her four-month-old son, Trevor, at the Lilongwe Police Station on Wednesday.

Duncan was traumatised after her baby was stolen by a woman posing as a ‘Good Samaritan’ who offered to tend to the baby at a hospital gate, beyond which mothers or guardians carrying babies, are not allowed entry into the maternity section.

Duncan, who wanted to personally offer food and cheer a neighbour admitted to the hospital’s maternity wing, fell for the alleged baby thief’s ploy to look after the child until she returned.

“God is truly great. My child is back in my arms, safe and sound, as I pleaded to the Creater,” declared the baby’s mother, a Moslem who spent the past six days receiving prayer support from people of all denominations.

The baby’s father, MacFarlen, was all smiles on Wednesday at the Lilongwe Police Station, where the young couple went to affirm their statement before the case is taken to court later this week.

The alleged baby thief, has been identified as Tiyanjane Khombe, 32, who lives at Nathenje, but comes from Mkokamasa Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Kaphuka, in Dedza District.

Lilongwe Police Station spokesperson Kingsley Dandaula said Khombe will be taken to court, to answer charges of child stealing, contrary to Section 167 of the Penal Code. n
