Lions go undefeated

Listen to this article

As defending champions Silver Strikers tightened their grip on the TNM throne, Blantyre United’s four-game winning streak came to a shuddering halt.

On the other hand, Escom United slumped to rock bottom while the weekend, once again, belonged to Red Lions.

On Saturday, Lions beat Escom 2-1. Their fine form saw them share points with Big Bullets, thus the Lions are the only unbeaten side in the top league in this campaign. They have gone eight games without a loss.

Escom hold the record for having finished the 2010 season unbeaten despite not winning the league that season.

The Lions have since moved to second place on 18 points; their superior goal aggregate put them ahead of Civo United who dropped to third after a 1-0 loss to Silver Strikers. The Bankers lead the log on 21 points.

In other games, Blantyre United fell 3-1 to Blue Eagles at an empty Kamuzu Stadium on Sunday.

Blue Eagles midfielder Peter Mgangira opened the floodgates in the 19th minute. Taking advantage of poor defending, he fired into the roof of the net a Micium Mhone left-flank cross. That goal came two minutes after Ken Mponda made what would probably be the miss of the week. Mponda fired into the sky when all he needed was to pass the ball or clear it away from goal.

Jimmy Chikulekule scored United’s lone goal 14 minutes later, tapping in after a goal-mouth scramble. But barely a minute into the second-half, Patrick Masanjala restored the lead from the penalty spot after Sparrow Msowoya handled while trying to clear the ball.

Elia Kabingu killed all hopes of United recovery when he finished Charles Ngosi’s counter-attack. It was simply an awful and off day for United. On the other hand, it was a wonderful afternoon for the cops who registered their second win of the season. The previous day, Eagles lost 1-0 to Bvumbwe Research. Vincent Chinthenga’s lone strike, his 10th in nine games this season, made the difference.
