Lions suffer league failure mockery

Red Lions FC general secretary (GS) Major Dave Gondwe has disclosed that they have been mocked multiple times by Malawi Defence Force (MDF) officials following Kamuzu Barracks (KB) achievement to win the Super League title last season.
Despite being in the flagship league since its inception in 1986, the Zomba-based Lions have never won the title.

Confident: Mwansa

Lions are the oldest army side having been formed in the 1970s while KB only graduated from the Central Region Football League five years ago. Before that, they also had a short stint in the top-flight league when they were known as Chiwoko.
“Some army officials tease us whenever we meet them. They say we were supposed to lead by example by winning the title because we are the main army team,” said Gondwe ahead of the new season kickoff next season.
The Lions GS said their target in the upcoming season is to win the title to end the ridicule.

“I must admit that playing all these years without winning the title has been embarrassing. That is why we want to turn the shame and ridicule we have suffered into a Super League triumph,” he said.
Lions finished on position 10 last season but Gondwe said they will not make any major changes to the squad.

“We have about four players from lower leagues that are having trials here. Other than that, we have re-signed midfielder Sunganani Msiska from our reserve side Cobbe Barracks FC. We believe in the players we have because they are capable of doing wonders,” he said.
Red Lions assistant coach Pritchard Mwansa said he was optimistic that the team can win the title despite not making major signings.
