Lilongwe Water Board (LWB), Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) and Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL) have launched a campaign aimed at sensitising the public to the evils of vandalism.

Speaking during the official launch of the campaign at Chinsapo Unicef ground in Lilongwe on Saturday, Escom acting regional manager for the Centre, Youngie Chewele, said vandalism, particularly in the city of Lilongwe, was affecting the efficiency of the companies.

“This meeting is great because three service provider institutions have joined hands to spread the message.

“We want to tell people about how much money is lost through vandalism and how this negatively contributes to the development of the country,” he said.

LWB director of finance Steve Mbewe said his institution is affected by theft of water valves, water meters, pipes and unnecessary blockage of running water pipes.

Lilongwe City Council mayor Willie Chapondera promised to help the institutions in their campaign by engaging fellow councillors to take an active role and spread  the messages. n
