Maba polls August

Malawi Boxing Association (Maba) will in August this year elect a new national executive committee (NEC).

This follows the expiry of the current committee’s four-year term.

According to Maba general secretary Elia Kamphinda Banda, nine NEC positions are up for grabs.

Banda: Nominations are underway

So far, nomination for the candidates is underway and is expected to close on the elections day.

“Following the end of the term of the current committee last December, we agreed during our recent general assembly that we conduct the elections in August this year. Meanwhile, nomination of candidates is underway,” said Kamphinda Banda.

The positions to be filled are those of chairperson, vice-chairperson, general secretary, vice-general secretary, treasurer and four executive committee members.

As of now, Kamphinda Banda said he is yet to compile the list of those that have shown interest in various positions.

“We have the names. However, I am yet to compile the whole list. Still more, we are encouraging our members to come and contest so that we should not have unopposed positions. We need competition in all the positions to be filled,” he said.

Meanwhile, Maba incumbent president Justice Katika has indicated that he will not seek are-election.

“I will be attending to other things. I will not stand again, I have done my part, let others come,” he said.

The new Maba NEC is expected to supervise both professional and amateur boxing, following an International Boxing Association (Aiba) ruling in August 2016 that they can also control professional boxing. n
