Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) on Monday held a stakeholders meeting in Blantyre in preparation for a World Radio Communications Conference (WRC-15) to take place in Geneva, Switzerland later this year.

Opening the meeting, Macra board legal and administration sub committee chairperson Chancy Gondwe said input from the participants would strengthen Malawi’s position at the Geneva conference in November.macra

Gondwe said the World Radio Conference is a landmark conference for the radio communication world as it brings together over 3 000 radio communication experts to discuss efficient use of the radio-frequency spectrum and satellite orbits.

He said: “We are very privileged that Malawi is chairing the preparatory process for the World Radio Conference 2015 for the Southern Africa Development Conference [Sadc] region. We owe this regional leadership to you our stakeholders in the communications sector.”

Macra deputy director Francis Bisika told the meeting that as a regulatory authority of communication services, Macra believes in a participatory approach in the way it carries out its mandate.

Participants at the day-long conference were drawn from different companies, including phone operators and Malawian Airlines.
