Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has slapped Mafco FC and PremierBet Wizards with K100 000 fines each for maintaining coaches that do not have CAF B licence or its equivalent in line with the club licensing system.

FAM club licensing manager Casper Jangale yesterday said Mafco’s coach Thomas Maloya and his Wizards counterpart Peter ‘Mjojo’ Mponda, who doubles as owner, have accepted the fines.

However, he said the two will be allowed to coach until the end of the season as they had “convincing reasons for their failure to attend the B licence coaching course held last year.

“Maloya was outside the country on military duties while Wizards’ participation in the Super League was only determined at the 11th hour. Nevertheless, both have accepted and we are in the process of sending them official communication,” he said.

Mponda confirmed the punishment, saying: “We accepted to pay the fine because with only nine games to go, we feel it is not the ideal time to change coaches.”

Meanwhile, FAM technical director (TD) John Kaputa has said the next CAF A coaching course is scheduled for October 31 to December 12.

“It is a 30-day course which has been divided into two modules. Each module will run for 15 days with a break in between. I am currently drafting invitation letters for participants” he said.

The FAM TD, himself a CAF coaching instructor, said 35 coaches who have B licences, have been earmarked for the course.

He said among those expected to attend are Jack Chamangwana, Kinnah Phiri, Young Chimodzi, Patrick Mabedi and Lloyd Nkhwazi.

Kaputa said as at now, there is no Super League team coach who holds an A licence.

“We have quite a number of coaches that have A licences, but most of them are coaching in the second-tier leagues.”

He further said the next CAF B coaching course will be held in March next year and it will cover those that do not have the B licence such as Maloya, Mponda, Mabvuto Lungu and Elia Kananji. n
