Malawi hunts for crime sponsor—JB

Malawi Police are hunting for a prominent businessperson after a suspected robber who hit the house of deputy governor of the Reserve Bank Malawi Mary Nkosi mentioned his name as being the sponsor.

President Joyce Banda disclosed this in Lilongwe on Sunday on arrival from Maputo, Mozambique.

She said the influx of illegal immigrants sponsored by police and immigration officials and politically motivated sponsorship of criminals are some of the reasons on deteriorating crime in the country.

“One day, we will know the truth, but one of those that attacked the deputy Reserve Bank governor Mary Nkosi’s residence a week ago mentioned a businessperson as having hired him to dent the image of this government. So, we are looking for that person to explain,” said Banda.

The President said while mob justice is ‘illegal and wrong”, people might have been frustrated that some of the security personnel are assisting criminals in committing crimes—a situation she said forced her to effect changes in police and Immigration departments.

“When we made changes of those manning the borders and some in police services, the outcomes have been cases of immigrants being caught at borders. At Dzaleka Refugee Camp, there was a whole syndicate and you cannot tell who are criminals from genuine businesspeople or others,” said the President.
