Malawi has moved from the medium to the high capacity category to join top 10 countries in Africa doing well in building capacity in science, technology and innovation, the Africa Capacity Index 2017 has reported.

The report, a product of the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF) titled Building Capacity in Science, Technology and Innovation for Africa’s Transformation, ranks Malawi on position 9 out of 44 African countries with a total score of 60.7 percent.

Reacting to the findings of the report, local Information Communications Technology (ICT) body ICT Association of Malawi (Ictam) president Wisely Phiri backed the findings saying they reflect the work that has taken place over the years in terms of policy development in the ICT sector in the country.

“If you look within Africa there are still many countries that are in the development phase of their ICT policy or Cyber security legislation bills.  But the passage of such bills  here in Malawi made it possible for Malawi to be listed as one of the countries to do e-commerce business  with because we have the legislation that recognises electronic data and e-signatures and that comes with a lot of other advantages for players in ICT business sector,” he said.
