Malawi Paralympics Committee (MPC) will introduce sitting volleyball and power-lifting as additional sporting codes to athletics by December this year.

According to MPC president James Chiutsi, this aims at including more people with various deformities in disability sports.

Chiutsi disclosed this on Wednesday at the end of a two-day organisational capacity workshop that International Paralympics Committee (IPC) programme leader Mercia Takavarasha conducted for 12 local paralympics administrators and technical experts at Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) in Blantyre.

“As a paralympics body, our duty is to ensure that every person with disability is considered. There are some individuals whose kind of disability cannot allow them to participate in running races, but can do well in other disciplines.

“This is why we want to incorporate more people by introducing more disciplines, starting with sitting volleyball and power-lifting this December,” he said.

During the workshop, participants were drilled in various capacity building essentials such as strategic and operational planning, good governance, athlete identification and coach development.
