As part of building the sports culture within the Malawi Police Service (MPS), Area 30 hosted a sports bonanza for students at its premises.

The games, which started three weeks ago, came to a climax on Friday where Inspector General of Police Loti Dzonzi was the guest of honour.

Football, netball and volleyball were the sports disciplines involved in the bonanza.

In an interview on the sidelines of the games, Dzonzi said the concept behind such activities is meant to keep youths busy and healthy during the holiday.

“As a community, we thought it important to channel the energy of the youth in the right direction during holidays such as this. In the past, our youth, used to cause havoc here in Area 30. They were involved in fights and other harmful behaviours,” said Dzonzi.

He said the initiative was launched by former IG Peter Mukhito

“Since then, it has been an annual event. It is not only about sports but motivational talks on a many areas such as HIV and Aids and education,” said Dzonzi.

He has since appealed to communities across the country to organise youths so that they keep away from bad habits by engaging them in sporting activities

He said the money for financing the games is from the Welfare Department within the police.
