A Malawian referee Joseph Sanama—who is based in Cape Town, South Africa— on Saturday succeeded in a Provincial Referees Fitness Test Level Five that took place at Riebeek Stadium in Mossel Bay.

This has made the 28-year-old, who comes from Kankande Village, Traditional Authoritiy (T/A) Kachindamoto in Dedza to be ready for national duty.

Sanama, affiliated to Cape Districts Football Association (CDFA), was among the four referees who made it out of 15 referees from the association.

The fitness test, which is conducted every four months, was organised in line with the South Africa Football Association (Safa).

“We were running at grass track for the first time and it proved to be the most difficult to most referees looking at the pass rate,” said Sanama in an interview.

He said he has been shortlisted to sit Safa level five upgrading examinations scheduled for September 3.

In 2013, Sanama was awarded the 2013 Club Referee-of-the-Year at Nico Malan Hall in Cape Town. The annual award is given by Cape Town All Stars Football Development.
