Jhpiego, a non-profit-making global health affiliate of the Johns Hopkins University, has expressed satisfaction at the number of people who are patronising its voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) centres spread in selected districts across the

country.

Jhpiego communications and knowledge management specialist, Naomi Kalemba, said in an emailed interview Tuesday that her organisation has registered overwhelming response from men and young people in its campaign for voluntary male circumcision.

Kalemba disclosed that, in the past four years, 35 675 males turned up for circumcision in Mulanje, Chikhwawa, Thyolo and Zomba districts.

She said other 5 876 males were circumcised in the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) facilities of Karonga, Mzuzu, Kasungu, Lilongwe, Salima, Mangochi and Zomba.

“This is a significant milestone that contributed to the United States

[US] government’s goal of providing 4.7 million men by December 2013 with access to this safe and effective procedure that reduces transmission of HIV,” explained Kalemba.

Jhpiego president and chief executive officer, Dr. Leslie Mancuso, indicated that his organisation also provided technical assistance, innovative approaches and policy guidelines to African healthcare workers in an effort to expand the intervention.

Mancuso said this resulted in the circumcision of over one million men in 11 eastern and southern African countries.

  1. DOes it matter to them that despite all their VMMC patients, Malawi is currently experiencing the largest amount of new HIV cases per year?

  2. Check out the history of circumcision… in the past medical professionals also proposed it prevented or treated – asthma, bladder infections, blindness, club foot, clumsiness, compulsion to rape, constant crying, convulsions, criminal behavior, deafness, diabetes, diarrhea, divorce, dumbness, epilepsy, excessive saliva, frequent urination, gangrene, gonorrhea, hernia, herpes, hives, homosexuality, idiocy, impotence, indigestion, irritability, marital unhappiness, masturbation, mental disease, nervousness, nightmares, nose picking, oversensitive penis, paralysis, passion, promiscuity, restlessness, urine retention, sexual appetite, spinal curvature, swollen feet, syphilis, tuberculosis, urinary tract infections and wet dreams. Generation after generation they blind people with “research” that endorses genital cutting culture to keep it going and profitable.

  3. “From our observations and experience in such cases, we feel fully warranted in suggesting the wholesale circumcision of the Negro race as an efficient remedy in preventing the predisposition to discriminate raping so inherent in that race.” – Dr. P.C. Remondino, President of the San Diego Board of Health, January 1894.

American style genital cutting culture. Now selling snake oil remedies in Africa. Why else would this campaign rely heavily on condoms, knowing your status and behavioral changes to prevent HIV. Circumcision is a scam. All they care about is reaching their targets so that they can get their hands on donor money.
