Police in Lilongwe on Thursday arrested Fredrick Chiwere from Dowa for impersonating Vice-President Saulos Chilima to effect the release of his father who had been arrested for receiving stolen goods.

According to Esther Mkwanda, Kanengo Police Station public relations officer, Chiwere called the station in the evening of April 22 and ordered the release of his father, Munde Chiwere, who had been arrested that same day.arrest

“One of the officers received a call from Frederick Chiwere who claimed he was the vice president. While speaking like the Vice-President, Chiwere ordered the police to immediately release the suspect whom he said was his uncle,” said Mkwanda.

She explained that Chiwere called the police three times and threatened to fire the officer-in-charge if he did not release his ‘uncle’ without delay.

“We became suspicious because of his persistence and his choice of words. Thus we opened an investigation right away and discovered that he was actually the suspect’s son. We arrested him on the same day,” said Mkwanda.

She said Chiwere will answer charges of giving false information to a person employed in the public service which is contrary to Section 122 of the Penal Code.

“He was expected to appear before Nkukula Magistrate’s Court on April 24, but he was down with illness. He will thus be brought to court when he gets better,” said Mkwanda.

Fredrick Chiwere comes from Chiwere Village in T/A Chiwere in Dowa.
