Police on Likoma Island are keeping in custody a 64-year-old man for allegedly torching a house where his first wife and children were living.

Neighbours watch helplessly as the fire
burns the house

The man, identified as Michael Lembalemba, is suspected to have committed the offence last Tuesday at Chamba Village in Traditional Authority (T/A) Mkumpha in the district.

According to a witness who did not want to be named, Lembalemba, who operates a radio repair shop at Mbamba Main Market on the island, allegedly came home ranting at his wife and children.

Efforts by neighbours and the police to rescue household items proved futile.

“Yes, I can confirm that Mr. Michael Lembalemba is in our custody and is going to be charged with arson, which is contrary to Section 338 of the Penal Code,” said Likoma Police Station spokesperson Mcliff Nguluwe. n
