Man beaten to death in Zomba

Police in Zomba are looking for two members of a community policing group suspected to have beaten to death a 38-year-old man for attempting to steal chickens.

In an interview on Saturday, Eastern Region police spokesperson Joseph Sauka said the two, only identified as Joel and Maloya from Kaliyo Village in Traditional Authority (T/A) Mlumbe in the district, allegedly murdered Belington Pindani on the night of June 20 2017.

Sauka: Don’t beat up suspected criminals

He said the deceased allegedly broke into the house of Gift Rabson with intent to steal chickens and the owner heard the noise and called for help.

Said Sauka: “They caught and tied him up with the help of the two members of the community policing who then beat him up until he became unconscious.”

He said the two went into hiding after noticing that the suspect had died, and the matter was reported to Zomba Police Station. Police officers rushed to the scene and took the body to Zomba Central Hospital where Pindani was pronounced dead.

Sauka said post-mortem results showed that Pindani died due to internal bleeding.

Meanwhile, police are appealing to the public to refrain from taking the law into their hands.

If arrested, the two will answer murder charges contrary to Section 209 of the Penal Code.

In a related development, a 49-year-old Latibu Selemani Banda died suddenly because of suspected food poisoning.

Sauka said Banda, a Kasungu-based businessperson, had travelled to Zomba to buy rice. n
