Man jailed 5 months for undressing wife in public

Machinga Magistrate’s Court has sentenced Austin Ligomeka, 55, to five months imprisonment for assaulting and undressing his wife in public.

Police prosecutor Rodrick Kamuona told the court on Tuesday that Ligomeka saw his 32-year-old wife wearing new clothes which she claimed to have been given by her cousin.

However, this explanation did not convince Ligomeka who started beating her up and tearing the clothes, including underwear, according to police prosecutor.

The prosecutor said this was gender-based violence which is a serious offence that needs custodial sentence.

Ligomeka pleaded guilty to the charge, but asked the court to pass a lighter sentence because he cares for orphans.

Second grade magistrate Maxwell Boazi condemned Ligomeka’s action and agreed with the prosecutor that it was gender-based  violence.

“I, therefore, sentence you to five months imprisonment without option of a fine. This will deter others from committing such crime,” he said.

Ligomeka comes from Jusu Two Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Mlumbe in Zomba.n
