Manda seeks redemption after Civo nightmare

Coach Charles Manda has expressed optimism that Civo United’s relegation will not dent his chances of being offered a job at another Super League club.

The former Escom United and Be Forward Wanderers mentor’s short-term contract as Civo caretaker coach ends on January 31. He replaced Milias Pofera-Jegwe in the second round of the just ended season.

However, Manda could not stop the Civil Servants from being relegated to the second-tier Central Region Football League.

Manda: I still have the skills

“My contract ends this month and from there I will be free to join any team. I don’t think that Civo’s relegation will discourage other teams from hiring me. I still have the skills and knowledge to improve any team,” he said while disclosing that he has not received any job offers.

Manda, who once won the league title with Escom United, stated that he was not the cause of Civo’s relegation, insisting that he inherited a team that “was full of players that were not good enough.”

“Everybody who has followed my career would tell you that Civo’s downfall was not my making. There were a lot of factors that led to the downfall of the club. Among them is that most of the players were rejects from other clubs,” he said.

The coach also warned Civo that they would find it tough to return to the top-flight league if they do not reshuffle their squad.

In the meantime, Civo general secretary Thomas Mukiwa has confirmed that Manda will leave his post this month end, but cast doubts over the possibility of re-engaging him.

“There are several factors which we have to consider before deciding to extend his stay. First, we need to analyse his performance. The other thing is that Manda is a highly qualified coach and the big question is: would he be willing to coach a lower division team?” he quizzed.
