Marwa scores confidence mark

A six-year-old contestant at the inaugural of season 4 of the National Spell Master Spelling scored the highest confidence mark from the organisers.

One of the objectives of the competition is to build students’ confidence and six-year-old Marwa Mumba from Bedir Private Primary School just scored it. Though she didn’t make it to the regional bee, she impressed the crowd, including the judges, with her stage confidence and communication skills.

Marwa approached the stage with a spirit of the winner. No wonder, she kept on showing confidence by smiling even when her ship was sinking.

At one point, she sent the audience into stitches of laughter when she challenged the chief pronouncer, Victor Chikoti of the University of Malawi, that she did not have the word he gave her to spell.

“Sorry I don’t have that word on the practice list that my mother gave me at home,” said Marwa, sending the audience into stitches of laughter.

She continued to hold her nerve when she went for a photo session with Chikoti.

Director of Spell Master Educational Communications, Lewis Mbaula, hailed Marwa for her extraordinary self-confidence.

Mbaula said: “This is absolutely amazing. We need children who can approach the competition the way she has done.”
