Mary Waya Academy took advantage of Malawi Queens’ interaction with flood victims at BangulaAdmarc Camp in Nsanje on Thursday to get on board six more promising netball gems.

Queens visited the area as ambassadors of the United Nations Children’s Education Fund (Unicef) to cheer youths traumatised by the recent floods.

mary-waya-academyMartha Harrison (14), YasintaBauleni (13), SaidatiMhango (16), Natasha Mandala (14), EsnartZanditha (13) and FalesSempulo (14) were identified during a match between mixed teams of Queens players and Bangula Primary School pupils.

The six were able to fight for the ball against taller and experienced national team players and as well as let the game flow with quick and intelligent passes.

“I have noticed a great netball potential in these six girls,” said the academy’s director Mary Waya, who is also Malawi Queens coach.

“I am taking them on board so that they can get polished and become future Queens stars.”

Apparently, Waya did not include Nsanje in the programme of her talent identification exercise, but she said she had been excited by the six girls’ display of netball skills.

About 40 girls were unearthed through netball clinics Waya conducted in Karonga, Salima, Kasungu, Lilongwe, Mangochi, Balaka, Chikhwawa, Neno and Blantyre with a K5 million (US$11 111) Old Mutual sponsorship. Only 16 or the recruited players graduated and have been recommended to top clubs in the country.
