Wilson Masamba should thank the gods of luck for his split decision win over Malani Kayuni in a  non-title junior lightweight bout staged at Lilongwe Community Centre ground on Sunday.

So close was the bout that two judges scored a draw [76-76 and 89-89] while the third narrowly ruled in favour of Masamba on 90-89.

Masamba pocketed K100 000 for emerging the winner while Kayuni got a K80 000 consolation.

This was Masamba’s second win against Kayuni having knocked him out in the seventh round of their previous meeting about two years ago.

The bout started on a high note with both boxers aiming for a killer punch that did not come and it went down to the wire.

New Dawn Boxing Promotions, who organised the bout, said they were impressed with the performance of the boxers.

“Both boxers have proven that they are in good shape and can contest in title bouts,” said New Dawn’s director Mike Chimaliza.

Following Sunday’s victory, Masamba now boasts 20 wins [including 10 TKOs] , seven losses  and a draw whereas Kayuni’s record is at 12 wins [including right knockouts], eight losses and a draw. n
