Daniel Mazoe and Charity Kawonga on Saturday emerged champions of the Nico General Insurance Golf Tournament men’s and ladies categories respectively at Mzuzu Golf Club.

Mazoe, from Kachere Golf Club in Kasungu, chalked 41 points over his Mzuzu based runner–up Kalusha Phiri (40), to win the title. The title earned him a golf travelling bag and a trophy.

“I am grateful to God for the title and the sponsors. I am also grateful to my playing partners for allowing that I become the happiest golfer this evening,” said Mazoe.

Phiri won the second prize on the best back nine against the third-placed Mica Phiri (20) as both recorded 40 points each.

Mica received a golf bag and a trophy. Dan Mvura of Kasasa Club in Dwangwa finished fourth with 37 points. He received a mosquito net.

Longest drive with a handicap 4 went to national team player Wilson Kayingwe. Mzuzu’s Shepherd Tembo won the nearest to the pin accolade. The two went home with a grill each.

Bill Mvalo, Phiri and Mazoe each received undisclosed cash prizes for scoring a 2-club.

Kawonga beat her only competitor Alice Mvalo to win a golf bag and a trophy.

During prize presentation, Nico General chief executive officer Eric Chapola said his company organised the tournament to pay back the goodies to Mzuzu golfers for supporting their business.

He donated K80 000 for the maintenance of the greens and 2 000 score cards to promote the sport.

Mzuzu golf vice-captain Chrispin Mphande thanked Nico General for the gesture and pledged to continue supporting their business.
