Mbilizi, Mzuza clinch Airtel golf championship

Roza Mbilizi and Yohane Mzuza stood head and shoulders above the rest when making podium appearances as the best for the 2014 Airtel Malawi Golf Tournament at the Blantyre Sports Club (BSC) on Friday .
Playing off 21 handicap, Mzuza was the subject of admiration during prize presentation at the club when it emerged that he had scored top 42 points over the 18 holders in the men’s section that has some finest golfers such as Paul Chidale, Steve Chisale, Charles Merrick and third-positioned John-Gift Mwakhwawa.

 
Mwakhwawa, who was a champion of a similar tournament, held the previous Friday at Mibawa Country Club in Bvumbwe, Thyolo, settled for 38 points while playing off handicap 13 after a count-back. Bashir Sharrif, boasting a handicap of 23, scooped second place on 38 points after counting out Mwakhwawa.
Mzuza went home with a trophy, Samsung S5 and Nike golf bag, Sharrif got a trophy and a golf driver with Mwakhwawa receiving a gold bag. In the women’s section, Mbilizi registered 34 points and also went home with also a bag and Samsung S5.

 
“I would like to thank Airtel; the prizes are awesome. I would also like to thank my playing partners. We enjoyed a good game of golf,” Mbilizi said, a smile playing across her lips after pushing to second position Lucy Ganiza on 33 points.
In other individual honours, Fukani Gani claimed the longest drive and nearest to the pin for hole two and he received a trophy, among other prizes.
BSC vice-golf captain Nestor Msowoya, standing in for absent captain Hudson Kantwanje, took advantage of the gathering to announce that there will be an annual general meeting where all positions for the golf club will be up for grabs.

 
Summing up the night dominated by Airtel red colours were speeches delivered by the company’s chief commercial officer Charles Kamoto and board chairperson Alex Chitsime. Both speakers thanked the gathering for a good round of golf.
“We at Airtel Malawi are also impressed with the turn-up of golfers in this tournament. It is quite clear from the individual performances that the game is surely improving. This is what has been driving us to continue associating with the game,” Kamoto who eventually donated K150 000 to BSC through Msowoya for course maintenance works, explained.
