Mchinji District Council retains chairperson, deputy

Mchinji District Council has retained Edson Josiah and Haile Tsirizani as chairperson and deputy chairperson, respectively, during an election that took place Friday.

Josiah, who is councillor for Msitu Ward, beat Nathan Ndhlamini of Mkoma Ward with nine votes to seven while Tsirizani of Luwelezi Ward beat Dennis Lazaro of Msachembe with 11 votes to five.

In his acceptance speech, Josiah said he will ensure that the district council puts measures to generate more revenue.

“The council has the capacity to generate more revenue for improving infrastructure and the welfare of its employees,” he said.

Josiah said since his election, he has ensured that outstanding projects such as the rehabilitation of the council’s chamber, guest house, street lights and the taxi rank are completed.

Mchinji district commissioner Rosemary Nawasha called for close cooperation between the chairperson and the secretariat to ensure smooth service delivery in the district.

Twelve councillors and four members of Parliament voted during the election. n
