MCP wants UDF chief whip out of office

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) on Friday asked Speaker of the National Assembly Richard Msowoya to evict United Democratic Front (UDF) chief whip Lilian Patel from Parliament leaders’ offices.

The request follows UDF’s move to the government side in the House as part of a working relationship with Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). President Peter Mutharika drafted into his Cabinet UDF president Atupele Muluzi as part of the deal that saw UDF losing its voice in the House.

MCP chief whip Vitus Dzoole Mwale asked the Speaker why UDF was still holding on to a chief whip’s office when the party relinquished its voice in the House.

But the Speaker dismissed any attempts for the matter to be discussed in the House, saying the matter was administrative and would be dealt with outside the chamber.

Speaking in an interview later, Muluzi accused MCP of attempting to eliminate UDF using its numerical advantage in the House.

Then leader of UDF in the House Lucius Banda, who is also Balaka North MP, refused to move to the government benches. n
