Mdina Chess extends registration

 

Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam) has extended registration and reduced the fees for the 2018 edition of Mdina Open Individual Championship. .

Initially, the registration was supposed to close on June 1, but following the extension it will now conclude on June 10.

Chessam spokesperson Makhosi Nyirenda, the reduction of the entry fee is only valid to primary and secondary school pupils and female players.

Registration fees in the category A and B is now K5 000 while that in the ladies section it is K3 000.

However, pupils and ladies will pay K2 500 and K1 500, respectively.

Fees for foreign players remains K20 000 in open sections and K12 000 in ladies’ division.

Nyirenda said: “This reduction has been done to encourage Malawian pupils and ladies to participate in their large numbers because it is through taking part in the event that they would enhance their skills, considering that a number of foreign players will also compete.”

He said the extension of the registration period is meant to allow as many chess players as possible to register.

Meanwhile, 58 players, including eight foreigners (six Zambians and two Zimbabweans), have already registered for the event scheduled between June 15 and 17 at College of Medicine (CoM) in Blantyre.

The foreigners are Zambians Dennis Kabwe, Dennis Mwape, Richard Mwansa, Dennis Chilekwa and Judah Simulundu alongside Zimbabweans Fortune Courage Gandawa and female player Talidyne Chaparadza.

Defending champions in the open and ladies’ sections Zambians Chitumbo Mwali and Phyllis Mwilolo have not yet indicated their interest for participation.

Top three players in the open A category will get K250 000, K150 000 and K100 000 in that order while in B section they will receive K80 000, K50 000 and K30 000, respectively.

The ladies section will see the champion getting K150 000, runners-up K80 000 and third -positioned player K50 000.
