MEC launches Civic and Voter Education Strategy

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) this Monday launched the Civic and Voter Education Strategy for the 2019 Tripartite Elections and beyond.

During the launch in Lilongwe, MEC chairperson Justice Jane Ansah said the strategy –which was developed on evidence-based research, in-depth desk review and the 2014 campaign review– is aimed at directing electoral stakeholders to facilitating correct and adequate information for activities and coordination.

Ansah: Strategy good for coordination

Those who witnessed the launch included representatives of political parties, donors and civil society organisations (CSOs). The strategy is aimed at MEC officials, CSOs, other accredited service providers and all stakeholders.

 

The 29-page strategy outlines key areas and components, including specific focus in the electoral process, target groups, delivery methodologies, materials (graphic and multi-media) to be used.

 

It also outlines the roles and collaboration of various stakeholders , media campaign, contents of messages, monitoring and evaluation issues a tentative operational and implementation plan and a logical framework.

 

Political parties, the Centre for Multiparty Democracy (CMD) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have commended MEC for coming up with the strategy that will ensure fair and factual messaging that increase Malawi’s prospects of having free, fair and credible polls next year.
