MEC launches ward by-elections at Khwawa

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) says it trusts teachers despite allegations from some quarters that some of them manipulate votes in the course of helping aged voters.

Commissioner the Reverend Maxwell Mezuwa Banda was speaking during the launch of by-elections at Khwawa Ward in Karonga District.

During the launch, political party members alleged that some teachers hired by MEC manipulate votes, especially when assisting the aged and disabled citizens. They further claimed that some of them (teachers) are corrupt as they ask for gifts from contesting candidates.

The politicians, therefore, asked the country’s electoral body to try other professionals to supervise elections to improve the electoral exercise in the country.

However, Mezuwa Banda reminded people at the launch that in the previous elections, teachers have done a commendable job. He said it is better to involve teachers because most of them know how best to handle people psychologically.

“Because of their nature of work, teachers are already aware of how to deal with people. As a result, they supervise very well.” said Banda.

MEC is expected to conduct by-elections of local councils on August 25 this year.

Apart from Khwawa Ward in Karonga District Council, other wards where MEC will conduct by-elections include Luchenza, Zomba Central, Msikiti in Mangochi Town Council and Chibanja in Mzuzu City.
