Meet disburses K25.7m for environmental conservation

Malawi Environmental Endowment Trust (Meet) has disbursed K25.7 million to two local non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and a government department to support interventions that address environmental challenges in the country.

Chiradzulu District Forestry Office (DFO) received K11.2 million, Foundation for Sustainable Community Development (FSCD) of Balaka got K10 million while Makhawa Focus Group of Liwonde in Machinga got K4.5 million.

The three 2016 grantees met Meet’s requirements for funding among several other orgaisations that applied.

Speaking during the presentation of the funds in Blantyre on Saturday, Meet deputy board chairperson Christopher Mwambene said they expect the three organisations to address the challenges they highlighted in their proposals.

“In addition, we also expect that these funds will leave a bearing on the livelihoods of the communities,” he said.

An official from  Chiradzulu District Council Idah Mphangwe said the money would be used to restore Mwanje River catchment hills and improve basic economic and social conditions of about 20 000 community members in traditional authorities (T/As) Mpama and Ntchema.

Makhawa will plant 10 000 trees along forest boundaries and rivers in Machinga while FSCD will rehabilitate Nkhonde River. n
