The era of blue and white colours at the Lali Lubani Road seems to have come to an end following revelation that Be Forward Wanderers FC has rebranded to embrace new sponsors’ orange and black colours.

But it would seem the executive has more work to do to sway the team’s fans who still want to remain blue and white.

According to Wanderers general secretary Mike Butao, in the next TNM Super League matches and other competitions, Nomads players will be wearing jerseys bearing colours of their Japanese car exporting firm, which has come with a K70 million (about $150 000) one-year sponsorship.

Butao made the revelation yesterday when reacting to an earlier report by the team’s marketing committee chairperson Collins Chitimbe in Nation on Sunday that the team will maintain its traditional blue and white colours.

“We have completely rebranded to Be Forward Wanderers and our uniforms will comprise the company’s colours except in special occasions when we will be seeking clearance from our sponsors to use our traditional blue and white colours,” said Butao.

He said this facet was included in its sponsorship proposal to Be Forward.

While embracing the rebranding, Wanderers supporters’ committee chairperson Dennis Chitsulo said the fans will maintain their traditional blue and white colours in the terraces.

“Of course, we need to make certain sacrifices to celebrate the sponsorship we have been lacking over the years, but as fans, we are not ready to change the blue and white colours in the stands. Only the players will be putting on jerseys with Be Forward colours,” said Chitsulo.

However, Wanderers board of trustees chairperson Rashid Gaffar was non-committal on the matter, insisting that a meeting taking place as we went to press would shed more light on the issue so as to make every member of the Nomads family to understand.

“We are meeting this afternoon to discuss that issue thoroughly. I will be free to comment on the matter after that gathering,” said Gaffar.

The Nomads are expected to do well on financial prudence, performance on the pitch and general discipline to see the Be Forward deal, which will be officially launched next week, extended to more years.

Wanderers were last sponsored in 2013 by Carlsberg Malawi, which came with a one-year sponsorship. Before that, they were unsponsored for three years after MTL pulled out in 2010.
