Ministry of Transport and Public Works has warned contractors that they risk having their contracts prematurely terminated if they do not complete government or donor-funded projects within the stipulated period.

Minister of Transport and Public Infrastructure Development Jappie Mhango issued the warning yesterday when he inspected construction works on the  Lilongwe Old Airport-Kwanyanda-Santhe Road and the Kasiya Spur roads project.

He said government is concerned with the growing trend among construction companies.

Mhango said this negatively affects government and livelihoods of the targeted beneficiaries.

Roads Authority (RA) chief executive officer Trevor Hiwa assured that his office will ensure that adequate financial resources are made available to the contractor, Mota-Engil Engenharia E Construcao, to facilitate smooth construction of the road.

The Lilongwe Old Airport-Kwanyanda-Santhe and the Kasiya Spur roads project is being financed with locally generated money amounting to K39.7 billion.

The project is expected to end in January 2019.

In recent times, the majority of construction projects financed by government or donors are not completed within the agreed time-frame, pushing up the cost in the long-run.
