The search for the next Malawi beauty queen starts next month in the country’s three regions, organisers have confirmed.

According to a media release by the office of Miss Malawi, auditions for the 2018 Miss Malawi pageant are slated for September 2 in Blantyre, September 9 in Lilongwe and September 23 in Mzuzu.

However, the organisers are yet to communicate the venues for the auditions as they are yet to confirm with partners.

Chairperson of Miss Malawi Albert Banda said the pageant will continue with the theme Managing Overpopulation, saying it is a long-term task which needs to be tackled with a holistic approach.

“We can’t arrest overpopulation in just one year. Hence, we decided to carry on the theme to Miss Malawi 2018. This is a long-term plan,” he said.

The Miss Malawi beauty pageant returned on a high note this year after being resuscitated by the country’s two top media houses—Nation Publications Limited (NPL) and Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS).

Organisers are using beauty modelling for social change with special focus on managing the country’s over population, which is worsening.

The reigning Miss Malawi is Cecilia Khofi who has since committed herself to the fight against overpopulation.

Overpopulation is one of the serious threats currently affecting development in Malawi. Resources such as medical supplies are becoming scarce against the soaring population.

Women’s poor knowledge on sexual reproductive health rights (SRHR) and access to contraception such as family planning (FP) is blamed for uncontrolled child bearing.

Meanwhile, NPL and ZBS have called on partners to join the war against the booming population. n
