After a two-year hiatus, Miss Malawi UK is back with the aim of promoting Malawi tourism and culture in the diaspora.

Ten women will battle it out for the crown on 28 September in Birmingham with up-and-coming fashion designer Felicia Ngoma set to dress the newly crowned beauty queen with her designs.

“Miss Malawi UK used to be an annual event but since we hosted that last one in 2009 in Manchester, the event went into hibernation. We decided to revive this pageant because this is one way of showcasing Malawi culture. We have also been boosted by the new Malawian fashion designer Felicia who has pledged to dress the beauty queen in her clothing line,” Miss Malawi UK spokesperson Thom Chiumia.

The beauty queen will also be tasked to promote Malawi tourism.

“We are making this Miss Malawi UK to be institutionalised and the holder of the title will be engaged in promoting culture issues here in the diaspora.  We also want to help in charity work, fundraising to assist UK-based charities for Malawi such as Malawi Health Care Support UK, and FOMO.

“Since we announced the return of Miss Malawu UK, there has been an overwhelming response from Malawian girls, mostly students, others doing professional work,  who have applied to contest. We so far have 10 contestants from different parts of UK,” said Chiumia.

He said there are several entertainment activities lined up to spice the beauty pageant.

“We are expecting other artists to perform at the event. They include Malawian artists in UK such as Hazel Mak, comedian Dalitso Chaponda. There will also be a surprise package of an artist from Malawi,” he said.
