Newly crowned Miss Malawi UK Alexina Phiri, who this coming weekend participates in Miss Black Africa UK, has lined up a number of events aimed at selling the country to probable tourists.

She is set to convince the West, most especially UK, that there is more good news about Malawi and Africa at large apart from poverty, HIV and Aids, hunger at events she is currently working on.

“I intend to achieve so much! I plan on making a difference, during my office and thereafter. I am very passionate about education and I can’t wait to be a part of progression! I have a few ideas and upcoming events which everyone should watch out for. The events, of course are about promotion of our tourism the positive side about Malawi other than the usual poverty and the like,” explained Alexina in an interview from Birmingham.

The queen believes what made her win was her determination and my ambition to help others.

“With this platform I can do so much more for my cause. Once you start fighting for what you believe in and it’s no longer about you, hard work seems almost inevitable. And that’s what I did I worked hard to become Miss Malawi UK 2013,”she said.

On October,5 at the Royal Regency Hall in London, 30 contestants, from 17 African countries, including Malawi, will slug it out for the crown of UK’s largest ethnic pageant, Miss Black Africa.

At an event fully packed with performances of Malawians in diaspora, including pop Dogg who came from Dublin, Ireland, last weekend, the law student at Birmingham was crowned the Malawi Queen UK, Eltina Maganga was first princess and trained journalist Agatha Phiri was second princess. Miss Personality went to Reisha Mahommed and Miss Popularity was scooped by Malaika Macholowe.

Four girls had earlier pulled out for unexplained reasons and only five contested for the crown.

“Phiri was unanimously selected as the winner, after she scored highly in all categories and requirements,” said the chief judge journalist and editor of Nyasa Times Thom Chiumia, who was helped by former Malawi national football team player, Mike Gladstone, former Face of Malawi UK 2009 Yasim Osman and a Zimbabwean fashion designer.
