The Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) modern laboratory project under construction in Blantyre will cost about K13 billion.

MBS director general Davlin Chokazinga said this yesterday when he presented certificates to 13 companies that have sustained standards in their business operations in Mzuzu.

The facility, set to be ready this July, is being financed by the Malawi Government, European Union (EU) and Royal Norwegian Embassy.

Said Chokazinga: “Be assured that MBS will further strengthen enforcement of mandatory standards in the country.”

He added that the facility will support the export drive for Malawi products because of the confidence that international customers will have on product certificates issued by MBS.

The 13 companies that were certified are Kawalazi Tea Estate, Grand Palace Hotel, Mzuzu Kips Express, Mayoka Village Lodge, Mzuzu Shoprite, Mzuzu Shoprite Butchery, Mimosa Court Hotel, Ngala Lodge, Chipiku Products Limited, Karonga Metro Bakery, Rumphi Metro Bakery, Steel Suppliers Malawi and Mame Motel.

Mimosa Court Hotel managing director Salome Mwanza, who represented other certificate awardees, assured the public of her company’s continued provision of high quality products and services.

She said substandard products negatively affect the country’s economic growth.

“It is good that MBS has recognised the exceptional work we are rendering, it is important that we should sustain that spirit,” said Mwanza.

In total, MBS has awarded certificates to 95 companies across the country.
