More residents accessing potable water in Chikwawa

Water for People, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) implementing water and sanitation programmes in Senior Chief Chapananga in Chikwawa, says it is making progress in ensuring local people of the area have potable water.

This was revealed recently when Minister of Health Peter Kumpalume gave Senior Chief Chapananga an Open Defaecation Free certificate at an event held at Kakoma in the district.

Harawa: We have reached most areas

Water for People country director Kettie Harawa said according to the organisation’s strategy, only people in difficult-to-reach areas have no potable water.

“This means that in the said areas, we have managed to provide safer water points such as  boreholes and taps,” she said.

Harawa also said since her organisation was leaving Chapananga area, they go to Ngabu where they intend to drill 125 new water points and rehabilitate 30.

According to Harawa, her organisation will also be moving to Traditional Authority Makhwira in the district where they will rehabilitate a gravity-fed irrigation scheme.

Chikwawa West legislator Kennedy Maluwa has since commended NGOs for transforming lives of people in his area. n
