Mourning the Xmas spirit that was

Jingle bells, seasonal promotions and Santa imposters in shops are some of the few reminder of the spirit of Christmas. Gone are the days when Christmas was a time the whole family looked forward to.

Parents are puzzled when their children spend time in the night clubs partying on the eve of Christmas, unlike their days when they spent it like a family eating rice and chicken at church, singing Christmas carols with a soft drink in hand.

chrismassThe daytime family reunion parties have been reduced to wild parties.

The children do not look forward to new clothes and gifts.

Weddings are even held on Christmas Day and people leave the quality time with their families to witness their matrimony.

Visit people in their homes it is very rare that you will find seasonal decorations hanging all over their living rooms.

It is very unusual to see people exchange gifts and Christmas cards are soon becoming extinct. Now people send each other messages via texts and social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.

Sociologist at Chancellor College Charles Chilimampunga notes that Christmas culture has been diluted.

“Nowadays people no longer exchange cards or gifts during Christmas. It might be because of mobile phones that they are able to text and send messages through social media platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp and WeChat,” he adds.

The sociologist argues that social set-up of the season has also changed because people rarely share the celebration as families.

“It is hard to make a conclusive statement as to why that is the case, but it might be because in this age the family has lost its cohesiveness. When the population increases, people get in contact ad associate with many people and that loosens the family,” argues Chilimampunga.

Pastor Constance Masamba of Living Waters Church argues that the dilution of the celebration culture has been due to the corruption of the Christian values in most Christians.

“The problem is that most Christians are just mere church-goers but they do not follow Christ. This is a period of sharing and celebration and sharing of gifts is necessary, says Masamba.

The pastor says the day is meant to be celebrated more than a birthday because it is a day Christians remember the birth of the living sacrifice God made for their salvation.

“People are not following what the bible says. They are using their own wisdom. Because being a special day, no weddings are supposed to be held on this special day. It is a day to celebrate the birth of Christ—period!” argues Masamba.
