Machinga East Member of Parliament Esther Jolobala (Independent) has been commended for donating an ambulance to people in Machinga to ease transport to and from Machinga District Hospital.

Speaking when he received the ambulance, Senior Chief Liwonde hailed the MP for her kind gesture which, he said, will help improve health service delivery in Machinga.

“We are thankful for the donation and it is our hope that others will emulate the good example to reduce deaths in the district,” he said.

In an interview after the donation, Jolobala said she purchased the ambulance after seeing the challenges patients encounter in covering long distances to the hospital.

“The other time, a patient died in a minibus at Ntaja Trading Centre on his way to Machinga District Hospital to seek medical treatment. I was very concerned to hear that, hence the donation,” she said.

She said the ambulance will also help pregnant women to receive skilled medical attention in hospitals, thereby reducing maternal and neo-natal deaths. n
