Treasury budget director Paul Mphwiyo will remain in South Africa where he is waiting for facial reconstruction following gunshot wounds he suffered on September 13 2013.

Spokesperson for the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) Arthur Chipenda Saturday said Mphwiyo is under review by doctors although he has been discharged from hospital.

“After a major surgery like what Mphwiyo went through, there is a period that doctors prescribe to observe and review recovery of the patient,” said Chipenda.

He could not indicate how much government is paying for Mpwhiyo’s treatment, saying Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg, where he is being treated, has not yet submitted the bill to government.

“Mphwiyo is still getting medical treatment although he is not hospitalised. He is being treated like any other Malawian patient that has been referred for specialist treatment in South Africa,” said Chipenda.

Mphwiyo’s shooting set off a rollercoaster of developments that have laid bare the plunder of government resources.

While some people believe that the shooting was linked to his fight against fraud in government, others take a more cautious view.
