MRA seize TZ bound truck smuggling goods
Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) yesterday seized a truck loaded with vandalised goods in Mzuzu whose value is yet to be established.
Some of the goods included cables, water pipes and taps weighing over 2 000 kilogrammes.
In a statement issued today, MRA said the goods were intercepted by the authority’s Flexible Anti-Smuggling Team (FAST) who were carrying out patrols within the city.
MRA said the goods were concealed in sacks aboard a fuel tanker enroute to Tanzania.
Reads the statement in part: “The goods which were to be smuggled out of the country have since been identified by Escom [Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi], Northern Region Water Board and MTL [Malawi Telecommunications Limited].”
Meanwhile the driver of the tanker who was identified by MRA as Patrick Chitsime has been charged with conveyance of prohibited items.
MRA said through its tips-off anonymous service, it has been getting information from the public that has improved the tax collector’s response to offenses such as smuggling and tax evasion.
