Mtalimanja Holdings invests K2.1bn in bamboo factory

Mtalimanja Holdings Limited (MHL) has invested $3 million (K2.1 billion) in a bamboo factory at Kasiya in Lilongwe which has created about 70 jobs, an official has said.

MHL, which is originally based in Nkhotakota, has rice milling and sugar manufacturing plants.

Owner the factory: Napoleon Dzombe

At its bamboo factory, the firm will produce flooring instruments, paint brushes, cutting boards, roofing materials, umbrellas as well as blinds.

One of MHL directors, David Kamchacha, explained in an interview on Wednesday that the company plans to export some of its bamboo products.

He said the creativity and innovation in producing products from bamboo is key to the country’s socio-economic growth and conservation of trees.

MHL managing director Bob Dzombe, who is son of the company’s founder Napoleon Dzombe said so far the products are on the market but the company wants to construct a showroom near Bwemba along the Likuni Road where they could sell their products.

“We currently have a challenge with toothpicks packages because producers are saying that they do not have the required machines. So, currently we are using the same bamboo packs to put in the toothpicks,” he said.

Currently, MHL is sourcing bamboos from farmers in Lilongwe Rural and Mchinji.

“We are creating jobs because we believe in empowering the locals,” said Dzombe.

On the rice project in Nkhotakota, he said the company has opened another farm in Dowa where they are growing rice.

“In Dowa, we have grown rice on 10 hectares and in Nkhotakota at Mpamantha, we already have 500 tonnes of rice ready for processing. We hope next year we will be exporting the rice because we will have enough stocks as we will be growing rice twice a year,” said Dzombe.n
