Mulhako wa Alhomwe will still hold its annual festival on October 28 at its headquarters in Chonde, Mulanje, despite the death of Bingu wa Mutharika, who was the group’s patron.

Speaking during a news conference at Chonde, the Reverend Louis Mwanamvekha of the grouping said Mulhako wa Alhomwe is not a political group as many people perceive.

“Mulhako wa Alhomwe was formed to revive the Lhomwe culture which was declining among Malawians. The group wants to teach its youth the Lhomwe’s way of life and as Lhomwes, we want to strengthen unity between us,” said Mwanamvekha.

Asked how the group will fund its operations, Mwanamvekha said there are many contributions from friends and members of the group.

“This year, we have received more contributions than before. When we talk about contributions, we are not only talking about money – our stores are full of foodstuffs, more than in the previous years and people have contributed more money.

“If people think the money and resources that we used in the past were from government, they were wrong. When Mutharika established Mulhako wa Alhomwe, he chose people who were already capable in life to run it,” said Mwanamvekha.

Mulhako wa Alhomwe was formed on October 25 2008 to promote the Lhomwe culture in Malawi.
