President Peter Mutharika has appealed to the country’s religious leaders to dedicate three days, starting tomorrow up to Sunday, to prayers for good rains and bumper harvest.

The President, in a statement issued last evening by his press secretary and spokesperson Mgeme Kalilani , also called on the leaders to pray for protection for all people during the forthcoming festive season.

“The President is also calling upon the religious leaders to pray for the enemies of our land; hunger, disease and envy, so that we all live together in unity for the betterment of our country,” reads the statement.

Citing some verses from the Bible and Quran, Mutharika has since further asked government officials, Cabinet ministers and members of Parliament (MPs) regardless of their political affiliations, to take the lead in attending the special prayers in their respective communities and places of worship.

Mutharika’s appeal comes at a time when Malawi is at risk of a weather phenomenon known as La Nina which is expected to bring about heavy flooding.

According to the Department of Climate Change Management and Meteorological Services, the weather pattern follows ravages of El Nino during the 2015/16 rainy season that brought drought and reduced food production by 39 percent, rendering about 6.5 million Malawians hungry. n
