Mutharika to attend consecration of Bishop Ryan in Mzuzu

President Peter Mutharika will on Saturday, August 27 2016, attend the consecration of the Bishop elect for Mzuzu diocese, Father John Ryan.

Presidential press secretary Mgeme Kalilani, confirmed in an interview the President is scheduled to attend the function which is expected to take place at St Peter’s Cathedral in Mzuzu.

The consecration mass will be led by Bishop Dr Martin Mtumbuka as the principal consecrator who will be assisted by archbishops Tarcizius Ziyaye of the Lilongwe Archdiocese and Thomas Msusa of Blantyre Archdiocese.

His Holiness Pope Francis appointed Fr Ryan as the new bishop of the diocese on April 26 2016 in Rome following the death of Bishop Joseph Zuza who died in a car accident on January 15 2015 when he was travelling from his home village in Mzimba.

Monsignor Michael Mughogho, diocesan administrator for Mzuzu diocese, has been the caretaker of the diocese since the death of Zuza. Reverend Fr Ryan was born on February 27 1952 in Trippery, Ireland. He was ordained priest on June 18 1978. He has served as a missionary in Malawi in several parishes in Mzuzu,

Karonga and other parts of the Northern Region. He is currently serving as Chaplain of Mzuzu University where he is also a mathematics lecturer.

The function is expected to be attended by Catholic bishops, government officials and Catholic faithful from all eight dioceses of the country, among others.
