Malawi Broadcasting Corporation’s (MBC) Innovations Awards is back this year with President Peter Mutharika hosting it Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.

MBC director general Aubrey Sumbuleta confirmed the development in an interview yesterday.

He said the President was delighted after a successful inaugural event held at the College of Medicine in Blantyre last December.

“As a broadcaster, we are honoured to have the First Couple extend this invitation to us and the Malawian public at large,” said Sumbuleta.

He disclosed that just like last year, the second edition is set to be full of surprises with lots of entertainment and unique prizes awaiting the 10 winners.

“This second edition will be building on the successes of last year’s event and there is a lot waiting in store,” he said.

The director general said from last year’s event there was tremendous positive feedback owing to the impact the awards made to the first 10 winners and their surrounding communities.

“Others who have never travelled in their life on the plane have done so and others have clinched business deals which they would never have done without the exposure that came through their MBC Innovations Awards victory,” he explained.

The 10 winners are selected in the fields of Agriculture, Science and Technology, Education, Sports, Persons Living with Disability, Arts and Culture, Large and Small Entrepreneurship, Environment and Health.

Apart from being splashed with cash prizes of K500 000 each, the winners were also awarded classy trophies, certificates and international training tours to the People’s Republic of China and Egypt. n
