President Peter Mutharika’s personal assistant Ben Phiri has given K250 000 ($500) to Complex Tigresses for travel to the three-day Presidential Netball Championship in Mzuzu. The championship started on Thursday.

Phiri said Tigresses approached him as their fan and he decided to support them in his personal capacity.

“I have followed netball for a long time and I noted that they are doing well. I also gave them the money as a token of appreciation for their achievements,” he said.

Tigresses coach Peace Chawinga-Kalua neither accepted nor denied that they received the money.

However, she was elusive to comment on the matter when The Nation wanted to find out why they approached Phiri for assistance when they recently won K7 million in the GOtv Netball Champions League.

“I will not answer anything at present. I will call you later, let me consult first,” Chawinga-Kalua said. She did not call till we went to press.

Tigresses, who were once sponsored by former president the late Bingu wa Mutharika, won every domestic competition in 2014, including the GOtv Championship and the Rainbow Paints Netball Series.

In the Presidential finals at Katoto Secondary School, Tigresses are battling against defending champions Diamonds, MTL Queens, Capital Alliance Sisters, Zomba Airwing Sisters, Blue Eagles Sisters, Civonets, Mafco Soldiers, Green Sisters, Karonga Queens, Mimosa Queens and Lameck Queens.
